The Songs: I’m not entirely sure that the songs featured here are MEANT to be terribly “popular” as they may have been impactful. Looking at the age of James Gunn, the director, my guess is that Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) might have been something that his parents might have been listening to when HIS father “smooshed his mother.” 🙂 ALL of the songs are much deeper, less “oh yeah, that song” especially for older viewers. I would compare it to my friend Jeff’s brother, who would have been right in the wheelhouse of THIS music when he was 19 in 1981. I’ve seen it twice now and the jukebox effect disappears inside the second viewing.

Yondu Being a Son of a Bitch: Something I hadn’t pieced together until I heard your review here is that Yondu – was a CHILD TRAFIFCKER!!. Stunning. I have to tell you though – Mavel painted an incredibly endearing series of scenes together from the entire Mary Poppins (he’s cool after all) allll the way through until the end of the film that even gave Yondu’s silhouette in the during-credits stuff was an excellent water slide that I enjoyed as much the second time as I did the first time.

The giant qualifier statement that I have for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is this: In 2013, I knew NOTHING about Guadrians of the Galaxy. In less than 4 hours of on-screen time, 55 minutes x2 of soundtracks, and a good solid series of thread to weave it into an incredibly successful series of monolithic Marvel Movies – Marvel has created more chemistry and character tapestry than the cumulative composition of all DC movies to date. They’ve made me CARE about characters and story that (with the exception of involving the Kree race) I knew nothing at all about – in only as much time as it took for me to be in a theater watching.

I was 6 in 1981 and Brandy is an emotion-evoking song even so.
Let’s not give Yondu too hard of a time…consider:
Ego sent Yondu to get Peter after his mother died. So, for the only example we know about, Yondu was taking a child to their only living parent. And… it is a parent, the (we could normally presume) legitimate caretaker. When he finds out that Ego is killing the “progeny”, he keeps Peter away from him. He kind of adopts Peter and treats him as well as Ravagers know how to treat youngsters. That is pretty bad, and savage compared to how we treat our kids, but then again, he wasn’t ritually scarred or had his teeth filed or any of the other barbaric practices that some Earth kids get.
