Preamble
Secret Avengers #11 continues the “Infinity” interlude as Fury and Coulson face the fallout of the release of Terrigen Mist in New York. This issue written by Ed Brisson and illustrated by Luke Ross posses the question of what does it take to be a Secret Avenger. And one hero must decide if she can continue on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s super field team.
Situation Report
Fury, Coulson, Rhodes and Garza face off against one of the newest Inhumans after the release of Terrigen Mist in the city. The newest Inhuman is highly powered and quite possibly insane. He lashes out mindlessly at the team, blaming them for his fate and the destruction of New York. They battle throughout the city, and the newest hero Agent Sara Garza is faced with the challenge of determining what it takes to be a Secret Avenger.
Level Seven Analysis
What's my favorite moment. Why it is watching Fury choose Coulson to watch his back of course. The team is in an incredibly tough situation so Fury takes a risk to defuse the situation. And he looks to Coulson to be the man to ensure that he can make it out alive.
I am trying to get a feel on Maria Hill. She spends this entire issue frustrated. Now is she on edge because she cannot see or control the battlefield. Or is it because Fury and his team are at risk. Is it possible she is showing emotion because she cares? In this series' run she has done some pretty horrible things to her team. Is Hill softening as she sits in the Director's chair?
Agent Garza narrates this entire story. And she is over her head. She awoke from a cocoon, was recruiting to a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. team and was deployed into the team all by lunch time. Garza may be learning fast, but she questions what she is learning. As the story ends Garza has to face the question does she has the stuff needed to be a Secret Avenger.
Conclusion
Agent Garza, it was nice to meet you. You did a really nice job being the everyman for us in the wake of S.H.I.E.L.D.. And I would love to see you again. But honestly, as I look to issue #12 with Fury, Black Widow and Fury on the cover, I am ready to get back to some classic S.H.I.E.L.D. versus AIM plot.
