The Magical Place (1×11) — Season 1 Binge Rewatch

This place could be creepier. But not much. (I love this location!)

This place could be creepier. But not much. (I love this location!)

With the DVD release date of Sept. 9 for Season 1 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., there's just enough time to watch a couple episodes every day before season 2 begins! And so, a binge rewatch is in order.

And from the beginning, there will be spoilers!

THE MAGICAL PLACE

After the dark ending of the midseason cliffhanger, we could have opened with accusations and anger.

Instead, we open with a fairly fun action set piece as the gang is searching for their lost leader Coulson.

That's kind of what this episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is: quirky characters doing quirky and exciting things while the other plot features dark and emotional and mysterious character moments.

It works.

We get a look into Coulson's memories of being dead.

We get Skye pretending to be May as she goes on her first solo field mission, even if it isn't official.

We get Ed Poe's murder by phone.

We get FitzSimmons being, well, FitzSimmons.

And by the end, everything is back in place. Except people's emotions.

And we end with more questions than answers, but we DO get answers.

I wonder, watching this show knowing the ending, is it better than when we were waiting for the answers to be revealed? That was one big complaint. It was too slow in revealing answers to the big questions, but I'm not feeling that here.

“You lost your will to live,” the doctor says, “we tried to give it back.”

And the question keeps coming up: why? Why Coulson? Why spend all this money and manpower to get him back?

That answer is coming in eleven episodes, and is possibly the most important question of this series.

Next episode: Seeds

Previous episode: The Bridge
