Preamble
I read a preview stating that we would see 200 years into the future when Bucky Barnes’ job was done. So I had to pick up Bucky Barnes: The Winter Solder #3 because I wanted to see this time jump play out on the page. Too bad that is issue #4!
Situation Report
In “Romancing Space” Bucky dives into Nick Fury’s files to proactively solve a future threat. Bucky and Daisy travel to planet Mer’z’bow to investigate Queen Ventolin Xtal. The Pao’ree people are pacifists whose philosophies will allow them to dominate the galaxy in the future. But Ventolin Xtal’s beliefs could destabilize the monarchy in the future and create cosmic chaos, war and threaten Earth. Bucky, being the smart assassin chooses the best possible strategy to get near the Queen. He asks for a date. And the two appear to have some chemistry that leads us to question Bucky’s mission. Elsewhere on the planet are two other invaders who have deep interests in Bucky’s mission, probably.
Level Seven Analysis
So yeah, totally not the issue I thought. So yes, one more issue will be reviewed because I really want to see the future. I have seen enough hints through Daisy’s and others’ eyes of what could come and I want to see it so bad.
One of the other intruders on Mer’z’bow led to a huge is that who I think it is moment. I think it is a reveal that will please Marvel Cinematic Universe fans and was completely unexpected. You might find it weird that Bucky and Daisy are in a cosmic story. But at least they have a spaceship. I keep asking myself how this guy got the transport to be in space. It completely caught me by surprise and I will give Ales Kot a big “you got me bro” moment here.
Bucky wants a date. Daisy does not. Daisy has a lot of excuses, you should just pick one. But the real question really is Bucky are you in love? Does Earth’s protector have a crush? And is this the sort of thing that could distract Bucky from, well, all the killing he plans to do. I do expect that next issue with a time jump we will totally find out!
The Marco Rudy art continues to be atypical of most comics with an almost dream like texture. It does fit this story well.
Conclusion
Ales Kot has brought us M.O.D.O.K. in love. Has he now brought a romance for Bucky? I do not know. But I am willing to find out! Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier may not be my favorite comic title. But it does have my attention.
